Deep Tissue Massage: Does It Hurt, Who It's For and Aftercare

What deep tissue massage feels like, who should book it, how sore you will be and what it costs at home in Dubai.

Last updated:

Deep tissue massage uses slow, firm pressure to reach the deeper layers of muscle, and it is mainly for chronic tightness and knots rather than pure relaxation. It can feel intense on tight spots, but it should never be sharply painful. At home in Dubai with Zigy, a 60-minute session costs AED 180 and 90 minutes AED 230.

What Deep Tissue Massage Is

A relaxation massage glides over the surface of the muscles. Deep tissue massage slows right down. The therapist warms the area with lighter strokes, then uses forearms, knuckles and thumbs to apply sustained pressure along the muscle fibres and into knots. The strokes are slower because the tissue needs time to release.

It is usually focused rather than all-over. A typical session spends most of its time on two or three problem areas, such as the neck and upper back, the lower back, or the hips and legs.

Does It Hurt?

Expect some discomfort on tight spots, the "good pain" of pressure on a knot. On a scale of 1 to 10, most people are comfortable around 6 or 7. It should not be sharp, shooting or make you hold your breath. If it does, say so; the therapist will ease off. Tensing up against pressure makes the massage less effective, not more.

Who It Is For

  • People with desk-job neck and shoulders: rounded shoulders and a stiff upper back from screens.
  • Anyone with knots that keep coming back in the same place.
  • Drivers and commuters with a tight lower back and hips.
  • Regular gym-goers and runners with chronic tightness (for recovery after hard training, a sports massage is similar).

Who Should Not Book It

Skip deep tissue massage if you are pregnant, recovering from surgery, have a sprain or serious injury, a blood clotting disorder, or take blood thinners without your doctor's approval. Do not book it on sunburnt or broken skin. If you have osteoporosis or a medical condition, ask your doctor first.

60 or 90 Minutes?

LengthPrice at home (AED)Best for
60 min180One or two focus areas, such as neck and shoulders
90 min230Back and legs, or when you want time to warm up properly
120 min280Full-body deep work at a slower pace

Many people find 90 minutes more comfortable, because the therapist has time to warm the muscles before going deeper. It is also cheaper per minute: AED 2.56 against AED 3.00 for 60 minutes.

Soreness Afterwards

Feeling a bit sore for 24 to 48 hours, similar to after a workout, is normal. Bruising or pain that gets worse is not; if that happens, tell the therapist next time and ask for lighter pressure. To help:

  • Drink water through the rest of the day.
  • Take a warm shower or bath that evening.
  • Keep moving gently; a short walk helps more than lying still.
  • Avoid heavy training on the same muscles for a day.

How Often?

For a specific problem, some people book every one to two weeks for a few sessions, then space them out. For general upkeep, once a month is common. Listen to your body: if you are still sore from the last session, wait.

Deep Tissue vs Swedish vs Sports

Swedish is lighter and relaxing; deep tissue is slower and firmer for chronic knots; sports massage is fast and firm for training recovery. Our massage types compared guide goes through all of them.
